When Chara destroyed the head of Paccioretty a few months back, you pushed it off and told him to get back up. Rome’s hit was dirty and his suspension was justified for several reasons, not just that it was “a tad late”:
(1) It was a full second late to be exact.
(2) It was a blind side hit. Watch Rome’s skates in the replay. (The skates never lie). When Horton releases the puck inside the center circle, Rome is backing towards his zone (if anything, away from Horton’s lane) and his toes are facing up ice. He is still facing up ice when the puck reaches Lucic. It is then that Rome stops drifting backwards, plants his skates laterally along the blue line, and skates sideways into Horton. It was not a north-south hit. It was a lateral hit.
(3) It was a blow to the head. For some reason, there is no reverse angle replay showing what I suspect was an elbow to the head. But it doesn’t matter. Rule 48 doesn’t mention elbows or shoulders.
(4) He left the ice to make the hit. I know some people say it’s physics, but leaving the ice shows that he was targeting the head. A clean hit there would have been to go low with the shoulder and stay low and hit through body. He jumped up to make the head contact. That’s targeting, and it is illegal.
Canadian people can whine about this all they want, but hockey has decided it doesn’t need any more Matt Cooke-on-Savard-type hits. Remember, that hit was “clean” before the league defined it to be dirty.
Although the league didn’t say it, the hit was not only late but it violated Rule 48. That’s why it’s 4 games. That’s the same suspension Paille got for a similar hit on Sawada, although his was not late at all–Sawada still had the puck!
Malhotra is the best pure 2nd line Centerman in the league today, best on draws in the NHL. Even with 1 eye he could fuck you up Joe Kickass
