Does Anybody Give A Fuck About the Beanpot?
Growing up I think I went to the Beanpot like 5 years in a row with my dad. Like from ages 10-15 it was one of my favorite nights of the year. I loved it. I’d just root for whoever the underdog was. Well tonight is the 61st annual Beanpot and I haven’t heard a god damn peep about it. Do people give a shit about the Beanpot? Did people ever give a shit about the Beanpot? Or was I just little so everything seemed cool and awesome. I mean in a hockey crazed town I feel like the Beanpot has become an absolute afterthought. Hell I didn’t even know it was tonight till 5 seconds ago. I guess I’m curious where the Beanpot ranks in terms of significant Boston events. Like if Opening Day, Patriots Day, St Paddy’s Day are 10’s what is the Beanpot? A zero?
Quick Update – I just asked our intern who plays hockey at Curry whether he cares about the Beanpot. He said it would be better if teams from Colorado played in it. Umm worst answer ever given to anything bro.

A true band-wagon pink hat only really cares about the Patriots and the Red Sox with maybe a little love for the Bruins if they can figure out how the ‘hockey thing’ works. Bean Pot gives these kids to play infront of WCHA sized crowds which is good for them and good for the sport.
With the advent of cable and a plethora of sport viewing options many second tier or local sports events have been marginalized. People can simply stay home and watch it on NESN, watch something else, or actually DO something else. Part of the reason why pro sports teams in So. Cal and So. Florida struggle to get fans at their games. Too many other options competing for the dollar.
Also it used to be a dream to grow up and play hockey at a local college. Now with minor leagues and juniors its just not a big deal anymore.

it’s a 3 max. Beanpot has a lot of issues. 2 teams out of a 4 team tourney have gone 20+ years without winning it and have no shot of winning it, that’s a HUGE issue. Hate to sound like a homer but the rosters just aren’t Mass players anymore. All teams have 25 year old sophomores from Moose Jaw that played junior for 2 or 3 years after a year of prep school. It’s jut not the same.

Beanpot is awesome, love these small mid-season tournaments. Went to the Dartmouth/UNH/Umass/Bemidji State tournament ni Hanover. Bunch of hockey fans tons of smokes.

the only student in Boston who say they don’t care about the Beanpot are the ones who couldn’t get into those schools i.e. Suffolk, etc.

I didn’t mean literally 25 year old sophomores. But most college hockey players are 2-3 years older than their classmates. nobody goes from Needham youth hockey to CM to St Seb’s to BC anymore. It’s just not how it’s done. I think that’s a problem for a tournament like this. Northeastern and Harvard are bigger problems though. You need each school to have somewhat of an equal chance for the Beanpot to have any hope at all.

If you went to one of the four schools (BC/BU/Harvard/Northeastern) and are even simply ambivalent about hockey, you’ll care about it.
Even if you didn’t go to one of the schools, but care about hockey, you’ll notice it. You might even have the chance to see a future pro player under the bright lights – I saw Chris Drury & Rick DiPietro back in the day, and Chris Bourque passed through there in ’05.
At the very least, the championship game is a cheap, fun night of (hopefully good) hockey in the Garden. The prelims – eh, who cares unless you have BU vs. BC in the first round (in which case, odds are the winner of that game has a free pass to the trophy :/ ).

Make it a Hockey East tournament and I’ll care. Replace Harvard and have a play-in or let the top 4 teams from previous season’s Hockey East tournament play in the Beanpot. I just can’t take a sports tournament that includes Harvard seriously. Also Medway is spot on with his HE assessment – there are Mass guys, but the majority play junior first.
