Humarock Wants To Secede From Scituate Over Bonfire Controversy
Bostonherald – Hundreds of freedom fighters in flip-flops and shorts — outraged that their town fathers squelched their liberty celebration on July 3 and now won’t answer their questions — packed Humarock’s community hall yesterday demanding that Scituate officials pull their heads out of the sand and tell them who sent all the cops to enforce the new ban on bonfires. “Where are our freedoms? It was a 180 from what this holiday means. That’s why we’re upset,” South Humarock Civic Association president Fred Hayden said to cheers from the standing room-only crowd of 250. “You are the angry mob the selectmen do not want to talk to.”A delegation of Humarock homeowners said they were turned away from the selectmen’s July 10 meeting, denied the right to ask questions. Town authorities did not respond yesterday to requests for comment. The perturbed peninsula’s calls to arms include everything from petitioning and suing the town to exploring secession from Scituate Many were eager to launch a legal fund to help 70-year-old grandfather Mike Joyce. Joyce is facing a disorderly conduct charge Aug. 15 in Hingham District Court for his Tiananmen Square-like stand against a town front-end loader that was dispatched to remove Hayden’s 60 wooden pallets, collected before the ban on Humarock’s traditional holiday bonfires.
What’s the deal with Humarock? I was literally just there last weekend because one of the First Lady’s friends had a beach house and we spent the weekend there. I saw people walking around with Humarock tshirts and people had Humarock bumper stickers and shit. Everybody bragging about Pete Kendall having a house in Humarock and acting like they were a town or something. I never even heard of it before. Now I’m reading they want to succeed from Scituate? Listen I love their frontier spirit and how they are fighting for their right to have bonfires but unless I missed it isn’t Humarock just like a beach? Like it’s one street right? They are acting like they are an occupied territory or something. Who are these people and where do they come from?

What the drunks don’t get is that it’s a State Law, not a Scituate law that was being enforced….so what state will they be joining? Like when the Police Chief said, “got a problem with us enforcing a law, take it to the State House.” And then they all went back to drinking out of their little red plastic cups.
I remember getting arrested at Humarock with like 15 other people for underage drinking like 10 years ago on July 3rd. O memories haha.

Do your homework,if Humarock secedes, as a Scituate resident you’ll lose in the area of 15% of your operating budget for a section of town that gets no services, but provides over 7 million dollars in tax revenue. It has under 20 children in the school system. Most of the houses in Humarock are vacation homes, you’re lucky to have them!! Not sure about you getting any smarter! If you really follow the whole story it’s not about the bonfires, it’s about the violation of our rights. It’s government run amuck, the Town Administrator, the Police Chief and the Selectman have decided that they are above the law and not servants of the public. THERE WERE NO BONFIRES. Humarock has complied every year with the town’s mandates. They bought fire permits last year when they were asked to. Over 60 of them. If it wasn’t against the law last year to have a permitted fire, how is it illegal this year? The residents have never been the problem, it’s the outsiders that flood in. I’m sure if the Selectmen issued you a letter two weeks before Christmas and told you it was illegal to have Christmas trees in your home, then they were going to come into your home and charge you to remove it all while the people hadn’t voted for it, you’d be pissed too. If you’re a resident you should really be looking to have the Town Administrator and Police Chief Stewart fired. The A.G.’s office should investigate Lt. Stewart of the Scituate Police and his niece Lt. Jeanne Stewart in the State Fire Marshall’s office and vote out the Selectmen for forgetting who they work for. i think the quote I read was “fiscal irresponsibility.” I’m sure Scituate had other places to spend a couple hundred grand! As far as drunks go, I’ve been to your St. Patrick’s day events. People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. If you’re happy with government telling you what to do even if it’s not what the majority chooses, then you’re special. But living in Mass, I’m sure you’re used to having your dick stepped on and being told it’s always your fault. We won’t support you either when they pull a full military exercise in your neighborhood. You might want to consider looking into issues better, especially since they concern all Scituate residents. Most Humarock residents can’t vote because they are dual residents, so they rely on numb nuts like you to represent them. It sounds like they are organizing to rectify this, so go Humarock.
