Is This The Worst Call In the History of Sport?
No biggie. It only would have been based loaded 1 out in a 6-3 game with the Braves season on the line. Absolutely a horrible call. Even if you think it was an infield fly you got to call that early. Like what’s the point of calling it at the last second? And at what point did this look like the SS had it under control besides never. This had trouble written all over it from the word go. Just a surreal call.
PS – Is there anything announcers love doing more than saying how badly fans embarrassed themselves when they throw shit on the field? Like Braves fans are going to sit back and reflect in a week and be so ashamed.

yes
I thought the replacement umps were gone?
neils umpire counterpart made this call
They gonna replay the game.
Who has two thumbs and gives himself thumbs up on his own posts? This guy!
Pete Carroll thought it was a great call
Dear Atlanta,
Thanks for once again shitting the bed and allowing the Cardinals to continue on to become world champions. Yes, that call was bullshit, but you should be angrier about the way your infield couldn’t catch a cold tonight. Eat a dick you toothless grit-suckers. Sincerely,
The city of St. Louis
I don’t want to sound like a douche, but in my brief tenure as a youth baseball umpire (I know, I know), I understand why the ump made the call. But, in a game of this magnitude you don’t make that call. And also, you are supposed to make the call immediately, as soon as you get a gauge on where the ball is going to go, the arm goes up. But, this guy called it with a second to spare. You just gotta shut up and let the play unfold there blue.
actually its not a bad call at all. its the correct call. clearly all of you know nothing about baseball. when the infielder waves his arms to call off the outfielder it establishes what would be considered a “routine play” and when there is a fly ball like that with less then 2 outs and runners on first and second or bases loaded its the correct call.
Wish i was around during The Civil War when General Sherman burned Atlanta down to the ground. God, i hate those tomahawk chopping rednecks..
Hold the phones, everyone, we got the Mike Pereira of the MLB here to elaborate on the call. Take it away ficken-die-hooker. TBS not having you on there to explain the call is a travesty.
Love you faggots that refer to ATL as a bunch of “rednecks”. Half of the god damn city consists of northern transplants. Get a clue.
Bad call or not, the Braves are a bunch of choking cocksuckers, though.
Not an IF fly but regardless, you don’t call it early.. you’re supposed to call it at its peak
100% right call. it’s not even close to disputable.
Sourmelk you’re an idiot.. with that logic I’d just throw up my arms as the balls going over the left field fence.. sorry ump, I threw up my arms.. IF fly bro
@ficken-die-hockey I’m so glad that you shared you little league umping career with us, that really makes me respect what you have to say about the infield fly rule.
Finally Tampa Jack can’t talk about how the Cards are so pure and one of the best institutions of baseball. How does it feel to win while “cheating” Tampa you fucking cunt
Actually sourmelk, you know nothing about the game if you believe what you just wrote!! It’s a call that is supposed to be made immediately, and the catch is supposed to be made with an “ordinary effort.” That play was neither of those things!! Calling off the outfielder has no bearing on it. And your “routine play” is bullshit, nowhere in the rules does it use that term, so stop trying to quote shit when you clearly don’t have a clue what you’re talking about!!
All that being said… The Braves lost this game before that play happened!!
the whole point of infield fly is to stop a fielder from turning a cheap double play. If you think they could have turned 2 there you are a moron and I hope you still have the receipt for your pink hat.
No, going into the bathroom with Ben Rothlisberger is the worst call in sports.
Infield fly is any fly ball with less than two outs and a runner on first and second that is deemed to be able to be caught with ordinary effort by an infielder. An outfielder can make the catch, the infielder doesn’t even have to try to catch the ball. If the umpire decides that it could be caught by an infielder with an ordinary effort, his arm goes up signaling Infield Fly, batter is out if fair. Distance into the outfield does not matter. It is completely within the scope of reason that a Major League shortstop, slowly drifting backwards, waving off his outfielder is exerting an ordinary effort to make the catch, thus Infield Fly. You cannot decide what rules to enforce and which to ignore based on the magnitude of the game. How much bitching would there be if the home plate umpire refused to call balls because he felt a game was meaningless so the players should be trying to hit and not walk? What if a pitcher balks in the winning run in a one game playoff. How many people are going to say to that “I know it’s the rule, but you can’t call it in a game this important.”
I think the SS had it under control until 1945. We’re talking WWII, right?
You absolutely never call it immediately.. an infield fly can easily become a shallow fly ball with high winds making it a tough catch if its even caught at all. You call it at its apex so you have a good idea of where its going to end up. Obviously a judgement call so its not always going to be the right call
@shayes05 I get what your saying but he did signal for the Infield fly late. It’s almost like he just wasn’t processing what was going on then he threw up his arm, when he could have easily just let it play out. And when else have you seen that call made. Plenty of times short stops stroll backwards and call off the outfielders and the umps just let it play out instead of calling the infield fly rule. Cool story I know.
spoken from a true braves fans perspective… yeah, that was one of the worst calls i have ever seen, but any braves fan blaming the loss on that is an idiot. who knows what couldve happened, but we stranded 12 runners. my guess is that we wouldve had bases juiced and 1 out and mccann wouldve rolled into a double play. we lost that game bc of errors, piss poor execution with RISP and chipper jones playing like he retired at the end of the season. 1 for 5 my dick, that last AB was not a single. and seeing him dog it down the first base line left a really fuckin sour taste in my mouth. fuck it, go falcons
He didn’t call it at it’s apex, he called it when the ball was on its way back down already, a split second before it hit the ground.
The SS threw up his hands because he had no idea where the ball was, thats not an infield fly.
furthermore.. @sourmelk- you are a fucking retard hahah wow. clearly we all know nothing about baseball eh? actually im not even going to go in on you. just know that you are a fucking retarded asshole with no knowledge whatsoever of the game of baseball. anybody who thinks the umps got that call right need to swallow the sharpest object within an arm’s reach STAT
yo st. louis cardinals, im really happy for you, and imma let you finish, but if it was 2011, you wouldnt even have had the chance to play this game because your win-loss record was worse than the braves.
just saying.
Lots of vitriol here…..But I think we can all agree thats it good to see Mark McGwire back in the postseason. He is a real standup guy. At least we all agree on that.
hey Cancel Philly Site, Clearly you have the sense of humor of a fucking 2 year old. Oh ya, I totally threw that in there because it totally qualifies me as being an ump in the MLB. Its a fucking joke you mick.
There is no way that’s the correct call in that situation. Anyone defending this call is taking the rule far too literally. You’ve got to look at it in the context of the whole situation. Boston_George hit the nail on the head with his explanation. Does anyone honestly believe the SS let’s this ball drop in hopes that he’ll be able to pick it up and then throw to third then second. No fucking way. Also, when was the last time you saw an infielder not field a fly ball even if infield fly is called. It’s not like he figures I’ll just let this one drop, I’m sure the ump will call infield fly.
Im actually impressed there were enough shitty Atlanta fans to actually litter a field with bottles. Way to step it up.
Good thing it was Chipper Jones commererative aluminum bottle night.
Naw I’ve got a decent sense of humor, I just think your joke sucked. And you called me a ‘mick’, bahahaha what are you a filty guinea, if so tell your mother to shave her mustache. And if your black I’m just sorry for you. 2012 and your people haven’t made any progress just a steady weight on America’s shoulders.
sweet Affliction shirt worn by Chipper in his post game press conference…
This call doesn’t get made in some other game in this year’s post season and somebody’s manager gets thrown out in 3…2…1…
what a year in sports. all the worst calls in sports history have occured (according to pink hat pres). whether it be the little league 3rd bag miss, the pirates play at the plate or something that causes the pats to lose, its mind bottling how hyperbole rules the day.
for the record the worst call in sports history is letting jackie robinson take the field
slutnuts4 i really hope you die
I hate everyone on this post. Chipper is the man and that call was absolute bullshit, but the Braves gave that game away long before that call. But anyway, I mean this with every fiber of my being when I say FUCK the Cardinals. Oh and to all of you idiots saying ATL is “a bunch of rednecks”… ATL is 54% blacks and 38% whites, geniuses
Okay, so Atlanta is a bunch of “blacknecks.” Does that make you feel better, morrell90?
Go Cards. Wildcard bitchez yeeeeeehaaawwww
Anyone catch the Sox score, I was out at the Mets fundraiser ?
@lumpy When the cardinals lose out, all you have is the Rams…Nice, bro
Right call. Better team won.
Who cares. Fuck the Braves. See ya Larry.
Make kmarko move to atlanta (i think he used to live there?) and start being a braves/hawks/falcons fan and start barstool atlanta. Barstool in the south would kill it, especially since thats where all your stories are from anyway
morrell90..maybe i’m blind, but when i see a Braves game, and hear/see that idiotic tomahawk chop bullshit, it’s a sea of Caucasians doing it…rednecks.
Good thing this wasn’t Vancouver and good thing this wasn’t hockey.
