The option year would pay him a ridiculous $17.5 million in 2012, and New York really can't let that happen. It's a tough price tag to justify for a closer under any circumstances, but if you're the Mets — a not-quite-contending team with financial issues — it's insane.

according to NBC, the attorney for Bryan Stow – the Giants’ fan who was beaten into a coma in the parking lot at Dodger Stadium in April – says that the MLB career leader in home runs, Barry Bonds, has “donated to pay for [Stow's kids] college education.” Stow has two young children in grade school, and last month, Bonds visited their father in the hospital and left a signed baseball bat for the kids. As others have noted, if a media-friendly current or former athlete had made such a gesture, it’d be all over the news. Will the media ever get over its dislike for Bonds?
