Duxbury Hockey Player Suing Scituate Hockey Player For Assault And Battery On Late Check
SCITUATE — Tucker Hannon of Duxbury skated over the blue line, received a backhanded pass with his stick and slapped the puck toward Scituate’s goaltender. As the shot sailed wide of the net, Scituate’s Alex Way charged in from the right and sent Hannon to the ice with a hard check. The hit didn’t land Way in the penalty box, but it will land him in court Friday. That’s because Hannon’s parents are seeking an assault and battery charge against the Scituate High School senior. Hannon, 18, suffered a severe concussion on the play, causing him to miss the rest of the hockey season and five weeks of school. The hit occurred Jan. 7 during a game at The Bog Ice Arena in Kingston. “If this (check) was off the rink, on a public way, that is gross, negligent assault and battery,” said Jay Mullen, the attorney representing Thomas and Sheila Hannon, Tucker’s parents. “I still get headaches that I’ve never had before,” Tucker said Wednesday. Thomas Hannon said he only filed the complaint because Scituate’s school administrators, athletic department and hockey coaches didn’t respond to his family’s multiple requests for a sit-down meeting to discuss the hit. Thomas said he either wanted Way to apologize to his son, or for the school to suspend Way for two games. He said neither happened.

My son was in hockey since he was 4 yrs. old. Unfortunately, when he was a sophomore he had too many concussions in to finish out his high school career. (He was 6ft 170lbs, you don’t need to be small to get injured).

I may be a lowly tendy and am thus not as attuned to the physical contact aspects of the game; however, even tendies get run sometimes. We’re not wearing anywhere near the head protection (against hits, not pucks obviously), but you don’t see us bitching every time we get our bell rung… O wait, nevermind, I do my best soccer player impression and try to draw the penalty, BUT I do it for the team, so it’s noble.
With all that said, yes by the rules it’s just a hit within today’s rules. However, very few kids have any idea on how to check or why checking is even allowed. The goal is to separate the player from the puck. Pretty simple. too many think the goal is to blast the player into Bolivian (yeah, I know) and to maim the mother f’er. That really isn’t part of the game…at any level. Yeah, back in my day it was fun & games to go and blow-up a kid but now the kids are so much bigger, so much stronger and so much faster….this shit is now for real. All that matters in Mass HS Hockey is Super 8 Tourney now. I’m from CT and whenever I meet a kid from mass who is like yea we won the D1 tourney or yea we were one of the best teams in the Division 1 tourney in Mass. I don’t look down on them as a person but I immediately think…WOW dude congrats you won the D1 tourney which means your the 11th best team in the state (super 8 takes 10 teams i think) so take those state championship bragging rights off the board and shove them in your ass unless they were before super 8 came into play. Two top five teams this year from CT won against Super 8 teams (Hamden CT, played Malden Catholic to a tie in CT state standards but it was for a tourney so they had to play until a win ensued…..Then Fairfield Prep beat CM in the closing seconds of the game.) I don’t know how that compares to anything…..but. EAT IT, I was on some sort of a rant.

Ive never played or heard of Duxbury and no matter where you play anyone could get hit like this… has nothing to do with being a p***y. To be completely honest he did not leave his feet, he was cutting in to make the hit. His hands were a little bit high but not enough to be a dirty hit. and it was by no means late he had possession of the puck and took a shot. (watch the NHL many hits come 1-3 seconds after they dump it in). The other kids head wasn’t down but was admiring his shot and never saw the hit coming (which is why he now has a concussion and flopped all over the ice). If you want to play hockey your head has to be on a swivel at all times. I’ve known a couple guys who took a normal hit against the boards and will never play again because of a concussion. This kid simply got run over by a hard hit, and if he does play again… he will keep his head on a swivel and not admire a shot that missed the net.
John125: He never charged, he crossed over took 1 stride and made the hit. If you watch the video and listen he hit the kid at the same time the whistle blew (good hit, not after whistle). Lastly if you pause at the exact time they hit, his shoulder is what is hitting him in the head not his hands. he follows upwards with his hands AFTER the hit because he has two hands on the stick and is cutting in (he was keeping his balance).

Body checking in hockey is about separating the player from the puck not separating the player from consciousness!
