IPSWICH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – An Ipswich principal is in hot water with some parents after he reportedly canceled the middle school’s Honors Night. David Fabrizio, principal of Ipswich Middle School, notified parents of his plan to eliminate the school’s Honors Night last week. “The Honors Night, which can be a great sense of pride for the recipients’ families, can also be devastating to a child who has worked extremely hard in a difficult class but who, despite growth, has not been able to maintain a high grade point average,” Fabrizio penned in his first letter to parents. Fabrizio also said he decided to make the change because academic success can be influenced by the amount of support a student receives at home and not all students receive the same level of emotional and academic support at home.Parents say they feel he is bringing down the education system; however, Fabrizio says he plans to include the honors ceremony with a previously planned end of the year assembly where students will be recognized in front of the entire student body.

Let me just say this. If you work hard in middle school and can’t make honor roll than you are a certified retard. And I don’t just casually throw around the word retard either. I’m using it here in the literal sense. Like you have down syndrome or something. You must. So this guy’s whole logic about kids being heartbroken makes no sense. A monkey could make middle school honor roll if they put their mind to it.

But having said that even if what this guy said was true about kids being heartbroken this is still idiotic. Because guess what? There are winners and losers in life. Some people are smarter than others. Some are better at sports. The longer you pretend everybody is the same the bigger disservice you are doing for kids. At some point you got to taste failure. Not only to make you work harder, but so you can find something you are good at rather than going through life thinking you’re the best at everything and can do whatever you want. The world needs ditchdiggers too. The sooner school administrators stop giving out participation trophies and pretending everybody is equally special the better off this country will be. Shit like this makes me want to puke.
