Are Bruins Fans Demented?
I feel like Bruins fans are demented. Just a really demented group of people. Like living in fantasy land and shit. Just going through life thinking that the NHL is somehow on par with the other 3 major sports in America. That the NHL chose to play their games on Versus or something. That if you don’t like hockey even though most of the country doesn’t that makes you a pussy. It’s almost like 40 years of losing has turned them into soccer or lacrosse fans. They are so sensitive that they freak out if you say anything remotely negative or even neutral about the sport. Listen I like hockey. I actually played it instead of basketball growing up. I like hockey players. I’d rather go to a live hockey game than any other sport. But watching hockey on TV is painful. That’s it. That’s the whole fucking story. It’s just not built for TV. The laser puck or whatever that thing was called was the last chance. Yeah I’ll watch the playoffs and root for the Bruins and if they win I’ll be happy, but if they lose I’m not going to lose too much sleep over it. I know that makes me a pink hat and a jerk, blah, blah, blah. Guess what? There are way more of me than there are of you. Hockey is Canada’s game which in itself should say something. If you’re going to get bent out of shape anytime somebody says the game sucks on TV go move there. Otherwise just accept that it goes Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots in any order and then Bruins/Revolution. Big win though last night.

PS NHL not being on ESPN is no one’s fault but the Gary Bettman’s, who is still mad that the company abandoned them during the lockout. It has nothing to do with hockey as a sport.

i don’t totally agree with the tv viewing opinion. Obviously if you haven’t played hockey, it might be a tough sport to follow on television, (same could be said about the NFL) .but watching a high level NHL, or Olympic hockey on HD is high entertainment. The Stanley Cup Playoffs are pretty amazing games to watch as well.

This discussion basically boils down to are you a basketball guy or a hockey guy…. I really don’t understand how people can think basketball is exciting. they score so often that each individual basket is essentially meaningless….10-20 point swings happen constantly….other sports a touchdown in football or a goal in hockey or a run in baseball have so much more meaning, when you watch youre on the edge of your seat because each score has so much meaning. a 2 or 3 goal lead or a 2 touchdown lead is huge…basketball doesnt have that..theres no tension watching the games.
Ill take the NHL over the NBA any day. Went to my first Celtics game last Friday since the Bird era and was horrified. Thought I was at a dance contest. I’d like to kick Lucky in the balls too! In the span of five minutes KG got stuffed trying to dunk, The Truth missed two foul shots and then the rim on a 15 foot jump shot and Ray Allen missed a wide open three at the buzzer that would have won the game. Rondo has a hurt pinky and cant play, fucking Thornton lost half his face last night and wont miss a shift.

But to say it’s in the same ballpark as the Revs shows a general lack of knowledge of the people in this area. I know for a fact people love hockey in this area – whether it’s the B’s, the beanpot or their own high school team. Maybe people in your company don’t talk about it…maybe they and EP are in the minority. The B’s have sold out 62 games in a row..and back before the Celts had the Big 3 and Rondo, I’m sure plenty of people were talking about them.

I’m in with the Bs but I’ve gravitated to college hockey in the past 5-10 years. But I dont care what people watch. dont have the time for 4 hour baseball games anymore.
in Boston it is simple. The Red Sox are the most popular team in the city followed by whatever team is winning at the moment. Nobody was a fucking Pats fan in the 80′s, the Celtics might as well have been dead in the late 90′s. The Bruins actually have a pretty good fan base for not winning a Cup in 40 years.

I honestly know one person who I’d consider a big Celtics fan, and he’s my token black friend. Everyone else I know watches hockey. Are there really white people that watch the NBA in Boston? I’ve never met one.
I really like hockey. Maybe that has something to do with my growing up in the Upper Midwest. I hold it far above NBA basketball in my hierarchy of sports. Then again, I hold soccer above NBA basketball, so that’s not much of a barometer.
That being said, I understand Prez’s stance here. Do I care about hockey as much as I care about football or baseball? No. I don’t consciously plan on watching any games, save for playoffs. If I happen to catch a game on TV, I do get invested, but not to the degree that I would with a football or baseball game.

in terms of entertainment value…1. Patriots, 2. Bruins, 3. Red Sox, 4. Celtics (unless it’s Finals).
Hockey is the most dominating sport in MA among youths hands down. Unlike baseball and basketball there is actually action in the beginning of the games. In bball you have to wait through a million timeouts in the last 2 mins of the game which takes longer than the other 38 boring minutes. Baseball is 9 innings of hell. Given I love the Sox and the Celts I can only watch the last 2 minutes or the last 2 innings its just too boring. It takes a lot more skill and balls to play hockey as well.

Sports fans are hilarious. Hockey is just a bunch of Canadians making Americans proud of their ‘home’ team. How many Bruins players are from Boston? Wait, how many are even from America? Two? The game is a job just like every other professional sport. Fans care more about the team than the players. The difference is the players get paid and the fans pay.
Let’s see:
-the sports has non-stop hitting. not tackling or fouling, but full fledge hits by guys traveling 30 mph.
-the sport allows fighting. the goons know how to fight well, and the shit is exciting.
-there are usually 5-6 goals per game. that is a good amount in my opinion.
-it is very fast paced. games are quick too – 2.5 hours tops.
Now I know that hockey is not for everyone. I get it. And it is tough for people in Texas to get into a sport they have never played.
But to say hockey sucks or it is boring? Grow up.

Fighting is way down this year, as are hits. Goals are probably up though. But there are too many teams that don’t fight or hit and it drives me nuts and makes for a very boring ass game.

It’s not just Bruins fans that are like this. Hockey fans in general have a huge inferiority complex. They cannot take any criticism about the NHL and attempt to put down other sports whenever they can. It’s kind of sad.
I’m with you Pres, I watch the playoffs (if I can find Versus), and I want the B’s to win, but that’s about it. They have a very loyal die-hard fan base, but to the population as a whole, they are a distant 4th in this city.

In my opinion the NBA is irrelevant, it’s boring to watch on TV and I would never pay money to support those thugs. I have hardly no idea what’s going on in the NBA so other than keeping up slightly on how the celtics or doing, just solely because of the fact they are from Boston, the NBA is nonexistant in my world. Just NHL, NFL, MLB, MMA, and NASCAR. But just because that’s my personal choice, it doesn’t mean i think that its a cold hard fact that the NBA isn’t popular. I am well aware some people are dumb enough to love that garbage. NCAA is the only pure basketball left.

Really Prez? Isnt this a Boston Sports site? Personally I have been playing hockey my entire life and was at the game when we destroyed Montreal. I understand Hockey is not the most popular sport but go to a Bruins game for once and get back to me. Its the fastest game on earth, which includes hits harder than any NFL game (with the exception of Ray Lewis). Fighting, which the frequency has increased substantially. Christ Chara practically killed somebody. I guess hockey fans are a rare breed and some fans go over the top. But if you can appreciate the passion… GO fuck yourself. Bruins fans are the truest fans in New England. We dont have a fake following like every other sport here. Dont get me wrong I love Boston sports and go to games consistantly every season but the fan base is expanding clearly only because of championships and that pisses me off. Bruins are having the best season in a long time, support that. Dont hate cause you dont get hockey. Its a sport you have to learn at a young age or you will never be any good. Hockey on TV would be SO MUCH better if they didn’t over zoom the camera and chase the puck. Zoom out a bit and let us watch the whole offense zone so we can see the play develop.
We all have HDTV now so we don’t need to be zoomed in on the puck in order to see it.
Only reason NHL is not as popular in America is because a majority of Americans are too stupid to understand the rules of a game, that they dont actually have access to play themselves. The constant action is too much for their little brains to process. So they use excuses like hockey is way too boring to watch on tv, even though it is the most action packed team sport being played. Plus, not enough minorities in hockey for the inner city youths to look up to.

I think the NHL should continue to grow with VS, Comcast is pumping money into it and it has gotten much better. Plus if they can expand their deal with NBC they’d be set. The NBA is just horrible. Probably because I grew up watching Bird and guys that could actually shoot.

Least athletic out of all major sports? You must have a genetic disorder. These guys play an average of 3 nights a week, and when they do play there aren’t 40 second stoppages every 15 seconds (football). They play continuously. Zdeno Chara plays about 25 minutes every game. He must be extremely un-athletic. That’s about 75 minutes of ACTUAL play time per week. Not to mention practices on every off day. Basketball is more on par with the actual complete athletic capability needed to play. But then you add in the “no contact” of basketball and they drop right off the charts in terms of athleticism.
Hockey requires much more physicality and athletic ability than any other sport, hands down.
How is a baseball player more athletic than a hockey player? That’s a joke. Baseball is essentially a hobby, or a skill. It’s like golf. Or darts. Or billiards. It doesn’t take “athleticism” to do. Some football players are more athletic. Toss up for basketball I’d say. The most basic thing about hockey, skating, is harder than anything in basketball. Maybe that’s why it’s played so much- because it’s easy.

I like how all hockey fans always go strait to the NBA to justify watching their sport…yes the referees are awful but NBA has the greatest athletes in the world and theres nothing better then being at a Celtics Playoff game the place goes crazy…Hocky is unwatchable on TV but going to one is awesome…I used to enjoy going to my buddies games in High school and its the atmosphere that makes Hockey good not watching a bunch of foreigners go back and fourth trying to score a goal who wants to watch 60 minutes of defense?
