BC Is The Only School In Boston That Doesn’t Give A Shit About Boston

Boston.com - BC, God love it (and ask any alum, He does), is a unique place. It views itself as a college on a hill, never mind that it’s just Chestnut Hill. It firmly believes that if it were not for its very presence, Boston as we know it — as a center for culture and commerce — would cease to exist. At least with all this prosperity, and with its Jesuit principles, you would think BC would be helping its namesake city in whatever way it could. Think again. Colleges are nonprofit institutions and don’t pay property taxes. Most schools, understanding that they can strain a city’s budget, contribute some payments in lieu of taxes. Harvard gave Boston $2 million in 2009. Northeastern kept property on the tax rolls and paid $1.9 million for it. Boston University, the gold standard, paid Boston $4.9 million in lieu of taxes and an additional $3.4 million on property it could have excluded. And BC? The school gave Boston $293,000 in lieu of taxes, and $383,000 in property taxes it elected to pay, for a total payment of $676,500 on the property it owns in Boston. That ranks BC dead last among the four major schools. I called BC’s spokesman, Jack Dunn, who is like a lot of other BC graduates — unfailingly polite and relentlessly proud of his school. “We are opposed to payments in lieu of taxes because we’re a nonprofit organization and have been for 150 years,’’ he said. The school didn’t seem opposed to the 27 firetrucks, seven ambulances, and six cruisers from Boston that raced to Conte Forum when there was an ammonia leak Tuesday morning. BC needs to get over itself.
Well this article wasn’t remotely surprising. I mean I could have told you that BC has a distorted sense of entitlement and doesn’t give a fuck about anybody but themselves. And Superfans wonder why everybody around here hates them. Well shit like this is precisely why. Listen I don’t pretend to know what the rules of being a non profit are, but having said that how is BC a fucking non profit? People are making money hand over fist there. How much does Gene Difillipo make? How much did they just pay their new basketball coach? How much does Spazzioni or whatever his name make? I mean it’s one thing to be a non profit that provides community services, but they don’t. And it’s not like they are a state school offering local kids cheaper tuition either. So what gives? They make a shitload of money and then just pour it back into the school so all their students can live rich pampered boy lives. Is that what being a non profit is all about? So you can build a state of the art hockey rink and bring the Fray in for Spring Fling and pay all your employees huge fucking salaries. Like why can’t the Stool be a non profit? I don’t want to pay taxes either. I’ll pay myself a huge salary and reinvest our profit in the company so only people who work for us benefit. That sounds like what qualifies BC as a non profit right? The bottom-line is that if BC is arrogant enough to think they shouldn’t give money back to the city to help offset the drain they are on the community then they should be stripped of their non profit status. It’s that simple. Fuck you BC. Fuck you.
cue the “go suck your dads dick” comments
I here the grandma natsees coming 2 corewrecked you’re speling and grandma.
That brought a tear to my eye….couldn’t have written it better myself. Well actually I could have, I wouldn’t have made all those spelling and grammar mistakes, but you know what I’m saying, the thought was 100% accurate.

I’m shocked you focused only on the money aspect of this story when the dick at the Globe didn’t even do that. Trying to link the selectivity of the admissions to this.
As a BC alum, McGrory really pissed me off. But in all seriousness, EP wrote a better commentary than he did. I don’t know all the numbers, and BC does contribute a lot in terms of money toward inner city volunteer programs and such. (They’re also in Newton) But if they’re jewing the city out of money under the guise of being a non-profit, it’s bull shit. That school makes crazy loot and they can very easily afford a $2m donation to Newton/Boston/Chestnut Hill wherever.
You get make money off this writing? Damn, get Dragon Naturally Speaking or something. This is kind of embarassing. Next time just post the article and say agree or disagree.
missed the best part of the article: bc “needs a culture of pay-more-money”. no shit. maybe they can also fix all the dropped calls surrounding their campus while they’re at it.
I’ll never understand it.
You pay oveer $50 K a year to go to a university that is pretty average and to top it off it supports an organization that basically sponsors pedophila….
You’ve just been duped on two fronts and you’re suppose to be better than what?
What am I missing here?
Other than that, it was a great win for the hockey team.
Wow, you guys (WhiteDude especially) need to read the FULL article on boston.com. The article discusses the exact amount of money BC pays to Boston versus the other Boston schools. What is posted on barstool is only an excerpt of the article. I know BC kids are used to skating by, but do yourself a favor and actually read the article…

Freckles McGee your pretty much dead on, and to think we have about one more month of this left. Hopefully I when I finish boot camp this whole Sam Adams thing will be over and Idol will be long done.
When you do read the article, you’ll have a tough time defending the pompous assholes at BC
Domination, unless your a pompous BC asshole, then all bets are off.
You do understand that BC doesn’t sit in Boston right? — even with the Archdiocese acquisition 90% of the campus sits in Newton and Chestnut Hill. Lets not let geography and facts get in the way of a nice hack job.
I also like the fact that the Beanpot schools are the 4 major Boston Schools. I wonder what Tufts and MIT have to say about that.
I did read it. 676k from BC, which is actually in Newton. And the $9.5 million they contribute to Boston Schools. Read that too.
And I agreed with El Pres anyway.
I have a little sister who goes to BC and is going to be nailed with giant student loans, a degree in English, and probably no job at a school that is mediocre in about every respect.
I’ll take my UMass Amherst business degree, four years of partying, no student loan, no gingers-run-amok, no BS theology classes, and my kickass job thank you very much.
Fuck BC. Give UMass Division I football and we’ll show people how a real school operates.
supahnomah,
so I guess when the 27 fire trucks showed up to save BC last week they should have said sorry we’re newton
Classic Freckles McGee…..but you forgot one.
Copy a few articles that have been up on NYBSS for at least 2 hours or longer.
let me start this off by saying i hate boston college. that being said i must tell you that everyone up there is not pulling down a huge salary. other than faculty its a bunch of blue collar type guys working the trades and housekeeping. the deal used to be that if you worked there your kids went to BC tuition free. many guys (plumbers, electricians etc) took pay cuts to guarantee their kids would attend and then the loss in salary would be made up. only problem is that now BC is fucking all those guys over. changing the game and making it much more difficult for blue collar kids to be accepted. anybody up their wearing a tie is a snake and an asshole.
check on the NYBBS puke article
bc used to give the housekeepers overtime by having them clean up after sporting events. now they hire 800 brazilians to do the same jobs for 7 bucks an hour. same thing happened with the parking for football. they used to use in-house people but they have subcontracted the parking out to some outside company. every chance they get, they screw the little guy.
bostnkid,
I agree with what you said. Article says that too. BUt times have changed and so should the tax status. My dad when to BC under and law. Lived at home. Commuted. That’s what BC used to be
Numero Two: Give UMass a Div 1 football program? Really guy? You’re entitled to a football team because you … earned it? Put up the money for it? Accomplished so much at the DIAA level that your ready for it? You may even get your shot when the Big East scrambles to replace Pitt after they go to the Big 10. Lets see how you guys do.
Funny. I thought it was BC’s job to walk around with a false sense of entitlement.
FYI–Mark Whipple is a BC reject. And that’s a fact.
Oh, and El Pres — before you go shooting your mouth off on Spaz — how much money did Dick Rod pull down last season? Good hire for you guys. It’s funny that the current Superfrauds would blast the Wolverines in every major sport.
And do UM or MSU contribute anything to the Detroit rebuilding effort. This is actually a fair comparison considering the fact that BC doesn’t reside in Boston either. But I’m willing to bet those 2 schools don’t lift a finger for Detroit. Look no further than the countless abandoned SKYSCRAPERS in that cesspool.
Basically non profit means that any surplus revenue has to go back into the orgnaization; not to the owners or shareholders. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make salaries whatever you want. You do have to do deal with all kinds or tax rules etc. to be non profit
supanomah, are you serious with that Chestnut Hill bullshit? I love how you want Boston’s recognition yet you can’t help out the city you mooch off of? Why not call yourself Chestnut Hill College? What’s the number for Chestnut Hill Police and Fire? Ohh what’s that, there’s no such thing!
supanomah- do your homework, what does MSU have to do with Detroit? Flint, Michigan is struggling enough……..you should try this thing called reading and look into what MSU (state school- not a private school like BC) does for their own city, Flint.
wilford please just stop posting, they are terrible posts- call it chestnut hill college, shut up, should be the new jersey giiants too i bet- you sound like a retard
For the record, when Umass plays UM in football this year in Ann Arbor, every single one of us Michigan Men fully expects Marcus Camby to show up and play at least a few downs to give us our money’s worth.
El Pres while I agree that is insane what BC does your a moron about non profits. Clearly your educationa at Michigan was wasted. How do you not understand that the concept of a non profit is that all the money they make goes back into the school itself. The salaries is considered going back into the school. The CEO or the Red Cross makes a shit load of money too. It is what is sad about these “non-profits” but it is what happens. I rip on you constantly but I never actually thought you were retarded. But after this article I change my thoughts you really are a dumbass
I want Boston recognition? What the F are you talking about? That doesn’t even make any sense.
Oh…and BC houses their own Police Department. It’s called BCPD. It’s paid for by the university and governed by the city of Boston.
The Newton Campus relies on Newton Fire. The main campus relies on Allston/Brighton Fire protection.
And BC’s contribution to the Boston tax base is commiserate with their presence in the community. Maybe we need to start accounting for BC’s contribution to the Boston School system. How many LSOE grad students work in the Boston system for school credit?
It doesn’t bother me that you hate BC, but your arguments are baseless.
Classic warped sense of self importance and self entitlement. Without the city’s name as the figurehead of its image its just another over priced college that no one would think twice about so I think they def owe much more to Boston than that. BC Superfags.
Harvard donated $2M. I believe they are in Cambridge. So the geography rebuttal is weak shit.
This argument is retarded.
Mitch. Cambridge is in Boston proper. Idiot.
ep it’s not like BC didn’t pay for those supposed 27 firetrucks that went to conte. Fire depts frequently visit surrounding cities/towns during emergencies

Numero Two said: “I have a little sister who goes to BC and is going to be nailed with giant student loans, a degree in English, and probably no job at a school that is mediocre in about every respect.”
If she had gone to UMass she’d be getting nailed by more than just loans. dont think shes gotta worry about that with the fruits at BC though.
PS: someone send coley to BC get him off my fucking campus, had a class with the kid. bigger douchebag in real life than on his stupid youtube videos. 3 5 7 Hobart = the fag factory
BC is a good school with a very good athletic program. That being said, their pompous alumni have talked themselved into believing they are Harvard academically and on par with Florida or USC athletically. If it wasn’t for the delusional alumni, I would be able to tolerate BC.
I second Numero Two on UMass at getting a shot at a Division 1 program.
Actually Supanomah Cambridge is not Boston proper just like Brookline isnt. Its “Greater Boston” but they are seperate municipalities.
Supanomar- While your defense of your school is nice, your arguments suck!
Oh…and BC houses their own Police Department. It’s called BCPD. It’s paid for by the university and governed by the city of Boston.
The Newton Campus relies on Newton Fire. The main campus relies on Allston/Brighton Fire protection.
So governed by the City of Boston, and last I checked Brighton/Alston were part of Boston buddy.
Also Harvard has a decent amount of stuff in Alston, their sports complexes for one.

Mitch. Cambridge is in Boston proper. Idiot.
Nice try retard. No it is not. Cambridge is its own city.
Supahhhhhh Nomahhhh. You’re a fool. Pick up a book.
I guess you prove the point of this article. Clueless Supahfan
I went to BC…most the people I knew weren’t these crazed cocky superfans you people seem to “know”. There are some dicks sure, but there are everywhere. You guys all just hop on the “it’s cool to bash BC bandwagon”, whatever, go nuts.
As for this tax thing… BC is at the end of the T line and is pretty much a self contained little town. I can understand BU throwing cash at the city because they are all over Comm Ave and rely on city services, but BC handles most issues itself with the conte thing being an exception. I don’t think BC is exactly swimming in cash either, they send me stuff in the mail weekly begging for donations and had to hike tuition because they can barely pay the faculty.
F Flutie. Ton of missed PI and holding calls on that play anyway.
There are two classes of alums from BC:
1. ‘normal’ people that might have come from a little money or none at all and their parents and they sacrifice to go there. Currently those students are second or third generation, where their parents probably commuted to the school.
2. the douches from the tri-state area who’s daddy manages a hedge fund and thinks the campus looks cute. The douches are growing in numbers. Mary Ann’s use to be the typical college bar to go to for cheap beer. Now that isn’t good enough for the students there, they go to Roggies and have martinis. These students are as out of touch as the kids who come from south east Asia and race up and down Comm Ave in their $200k cars.
I don’t blame people who didn’t go to BC for hating BC because of the douches and the administration. The administration is by in large very pompous and believes that they are the Harvard of Chestnut Hill. They have never been able to get the state and region to care about the campus or the teams as a result.
The city though for their part are a bunch of assholes.
#1 only a small part of the campus is in Boston. I’m not including the Brighton land since they are still fighting with the city over developing it. The article would have been more accurate if they included the avg $ per acre for each campus. BU should pay a huge amount of money. They have a huge campus. Harvard bought all of the land in Brighton and took that off of the tax books.
#2 The city and the residents love to complain about college kids. Without the colleges this city would be no better off than Cleveland. These kids bring in a lot of money supporting businesses. Don’t forget the research $ that comes in.
#3 The city wants all of the schools to house 100% of their kids on campus, but they complain when the school buys a new building or proposes a new building. These kids aren’t going to disappear or live underground, they have to go somewhere.
“supanomah said: { Apr 16, 2010 – 12:04:57 }
Mitch. Cambridge is in Boston proper. Idiot.”
Wrong AGAIN! Maybe Tuffnutz will come bail you out again with one of his insightful posts.
Governed by the city of Boston and paid for by Boston College. Same is true for the other municipal services–including the Fire protection needed to handle the compressor leak at Kelly rink (cited in the article)
Listen. You can hate on BC all you want. Shit, I hated 1/2 the people when I was there too. Most of the shit heads at BC don’t venture further than Harvard Ave or Cleveland Circle anyway. And the pretentious attitude is undeniable.
I have a degree from BC. We have a respectable sports program and it’s a decent school. We don’t set any standards and we aren’t better than anybody else.
I invite you to take in a football game next fall and maybe you’ll have a good time and change your mind about the school. If not, well that’s fine too.
But there are a lot of holes in this Globe article and the attack on BC is sloppy at best.
“supanomah said: { Apr 16, 2010 – 11:04:48 }
The main campus relies on Allston/Brighton Fire protection. ”
AKA Boston Fire Department….you fucking numbskull
And I retract my ‘idiot’ comment to Ty Webb’s roommate. I’m not from Boston. All I know is that BC isn’t in Boston. Technically, it’s not even a college.
BC = not smart enough for Notre Dame
PerksABeast – you gotta get your facts straight before you start acting like you know about Non-Profits. The reality is that schools are making substantial profit and by giving their “payments” to the community they are essentially admitting this.
Additionally, all you claiming the “BC’s in Newton” argument are missing the point. By having the name be BOSTON College they increasing visibility, applicants, profits, etc etc. If you want the perks of calling yourself BOSTON College, then you have to deal with some drawbacks as well. Can’t have your cake and eat it too….unless you’re a BC asshole.
Stop with the long fucking comments NOBODY CARES.
Supanomah
are you serious? At least UMass won the National Championship for DIAA in ’98 instead of playing buttfuck university in the I-Don’t-Give-A-Shit bowl for the tenth year in a row like BC. At least give a State school in Mass a chance to rep the state the right way instead of Superfrauding all over the nation.
EastCoastSucks
I’m heading out to Ann Arbor to watch UMass beat UMichigan and, after you are done whining about your team not getting a shot at the end of the season because of an Appalachian State Pt. II massacre, tell me how my ass tastes.
Ftheyanks119
I’m going to skull fuck your mom
Quann
Good looks.
El Pres
Where is the Lambert post for the day?
Have at it. BC isn’t stopping the MInutemen from making the D1 jump. BTW, every singe buttfuck university team we played in each and every I-don’t-give-a shit bowl would blast any DIAA national champion.
Umass would be an awesome addition to the Big East. It’s already a sweet conference. But you guys would really kick it up a notch.
I don’t know what worse: BC not giving up tax money for Fire Trucks, or UMass taking tax money to fund 65 scholarships for their club football team.
Damn people are so bitter. I know a lot of cool people from BC and BU. I go to BC and love it but it’s not like I stand behind everything the administration does.
umass has a football team?
Let’s be honest here, the only good thing about this site are the clips that get posted, the smokeshows of the day and the wake up’s. The comments and the people who write them make the site what it is. el pres as a person, blogger and real life cast member of “Revenge of The Nerds” writes the same shit over and over being from sarcastic on a news story, to posting negative shit about how much BC blows because you all get a rise out of it, and blowing dude’s on American Idol. He got an A in gym class,The kid was and still is a loser, ask anyone who went to school with him.
The Globe is the biggest piece of shit rag masquerading as a newspaper. That being said, that article was right on the money and I can’t believe it was done by the Globe and not by the Stool. And I’ll bet the Superfrauds shirts are flying off the shelves right now. Faking like we’re better than you since 1863!
