El Pres First Mortal Lock of 2010 – Fenway Free Skate Has Disaster Written All Over It

Boston.com - For the first time in the history of the 97-year-old ballpark, Fenway Park will open its gates to Boston children and families for free ice skating on two Sundays in January, Mayor Thomas M. Menino, the National Hockey League, the Boston Bruins, and Sun Life Financial Inc. said yesterday. City residents will be able to skate for free on a rink constructed on the baseball field on Jan. 3 and 10, as part of Boston’s New Year’s celebrations, Bruins legend Ray Bourque said at a press conference yesterday. The city of Boston, in partnership with Sun Life, will give out more than 3,000 tickets to the free skate on a first-come, first-serve basis on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at more than a dozen community centers throughout the city, including the Charlestown Community Center, Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, and Vine Street Community Center in Roxbury. Boston residents must bring proof of their residency. A maximum of four tickets will be distributed to each family.
I got a bad feeling about this one. Like this reminds me of the first year the Pats made the playoffs with Parcells and the Patriots had no idea how to give away playoff tickets so everybody just showed up the night before and rioted and shit. Yes I was part of that crowd. That’s what I feel like is going to happen here. Don’t get me wrong I think letting people skate for free at Fenway Park is a very cool concept. But what I don’t think Mumbles gets is just how many people are probably going to want to do this. Like giving away 3 thousand tickets is a drop in the bucket. So there is just no way this goes smoothly. We’ll be hearing horror stories for weeks to come after this event. I mean it’s hard enough to keep the frog pond organized never mind Fenway Park. So mark it down. This will be a complete disaster. That’s an El Pres mortal lock .
Scalpers are going to get friggen rich!!
Yeah, and 90 percent of the riff-raff showing-up have never had skates on before and only want to get into fenway for their first time.
Same bunch that shows-up whenever they see the words ‘free’ attached to anything. . . Good group… for sure.
so residents outside boston aren’t allowed? but we can still buy bruins tickets and eight dollar beers. how generous
So this mortal lock means somehow exactly 3000 people will want to get in.
Mots likely its the same families that use the fountain outside the Pru/christian science center, thats free too but you won’t catch me running around there on a sunny afternoon.
Great idea Mumbles…Chinatown and Roxbury really are the ‘Hub of Hockey’.
You just mushed it Pres, just like Big Blue on Turkey day and a thousand other times. Now it’s going to be a safe fun day for all
Fenway’s going to be stripped of everything….. grass, seats, scoreboard, etc with that crew being invited.
lots of broken ankles too. hope they have paramedics on call.
are they gonna serve beer?
Free 4th of July concert at the Esplandate-750,000 people
Charge 15 bucks a head-*crickets”
Just sayin’
750,000 . . . that’s about how many use the Esplanade all summer…. just love their ‘estimates’
Nothing says hockey crazy like ‘Vine Street Community Center” in Roxbury.
no stick and puck? that sucks
Hub of hockey= Roxbury
another great idea, give free tix to people who hate hockey and charge 10K an hour to people who actually want to skate.
I hope Lucic can play on Jan 1, cause we will see the first fight in the winter classic, Lucic vs. Carcillo. or maybe Krejci vs Briere
Someone will either get shot or stabbed.
I don’t know where the photo you have with this story comes from, but it is obviously fake. The ice is running in the other direction from first base to third base. Do a little research next time.
