CBSThe Los Angeles Dodgers have been awarded the waiver claim on Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, Bill Shaikin of The Los Angeles Times reported Friday. The report has been confirmed by CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman. The Dodgers’ claim of Gonzalez would be the first step in a potential trade sending the star first baseman to Los Angeles. The Times mentioned a potential deal that would also involve Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford heading to Los Angeles for multiple top prospects. Even with the first step completed, the deal is far from complete. The Dodgers would be taking on $253 million in salary, an absurd sum even considering the clear willingness of new ownership to spend, all while giving up loads of future value. The Red Sox have the rights, if a trade is not completed within the next 48-72 hours, to either pull Gonzalez back or allow him (and his contract) to go to the Dodgers.

First of all, let’s just accept the fact that this deal would be way too good to be true. There’s literally zero percent chance the Dodgers pick up a $253 million dollar tab that only has one guy who can play on it. Magic Johnson is plenty stupid, but he ain’t that stupid. Now having said that, I think just Adrian Gonzalez has a chance to get done. And I’m not sure I’m crazy about that. Gonzo isn’t sexy. He’s JD Drew 2.0 with Wario’s eyebrows. He’s whiny and bitchy and gossipy and an excuse machine. But at the end of the season, you know what he’s gonna give you. He’s gonna be above .300 with over 100 RBIs and about 20 home runs. Not numbers everyone can put up. I hate this team as much as the next guy. I can’t count how many times I’ve said “blow it up” in the last few months. But that’s obviously not something you can do easily and there are plenty of guys who deserve a one way ticket before Gonzo does. I don’t think the Sox can with with Gonzalez as the guy on the team, he doesn’t have the heart. But I think they’d have a hard time winning without him as a guy. Surround him with character guys and he’ll be fine.

And yes I know they’re not winning with him as a guy right now. But Gonzalez isn’t in my top 10 of guys I blame.
