37 Responses to Jimmy Breslin Not Impressed With George Steinbrenner

Old people have no filter, that was awesome. We should have old people all over TV saying inappropriate and politically incorrect things. The world would be a better place.
by forum_4um on July 13, 2010 at 10:41 pm
I think jimmy breslin sent sent steinbrenner a package of anthrax and somehow it turned into a heart attack.
by Rear Admiral on July 13, 2010 at 10:56 pm
He straightened that little fucker out about early 70s occupancy rates.

And Kraft never scored a TD for the Pats but they’ve done a lot better under him than they did under Sullivan and Victor Kiam. Brian Kenney can barely contain himself. Way to screen the interview ESPN

its not weird or sketchy or out of line. breslin had lived through all of steinbrenner, he’d watched the yankees through it all and knew the behind the scenes shit that none of us or espn have any idea about. shit was legit interesting if anything

amen, Manhorse. nicest rack i’ve seen in a long time. ‘wake up with’ included

I bet EP sounded Breslinesque when Jenna’s Youtube video, sans Barstool logo, hit 2.5 million hits. “Let’s not deify her!!! I mean, come on!!”
by samantha adams on July 13, 2010 at 11:22 pm
I’m glad someone had the balls to say something with meaning and truth. All of a sudden the guy dies and everyone forgets about him funding Nixon in the watergate scandals, hiring a man to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield so that he could have a reason to boot him out of NY, and generally being an asshole who hired/fired people like it was no big deal. Guy was the Scott Boras of owners, he drove up market values of players to the point where it forced a clear divide between major markets and small markets, essentially ruining baseball for people in more than half the country. Maybe if George W. Bush would just die already, people would remember him for all of the ‘good’ he did in the world too.
by manhorse on July 13, 2010 at 11:39 pm
If every owner adopted the strategy of throwing bags of money at every hole in their roster instead of worrying about turning a profit first then there would be 32? contenders out there every season. Bottom line is that he threw huge contracts at so many players that some of them had to work, and because the stadium was paid for and he could charge whtever he wanted once they started winning again, he couldn’t help but make money on the team. He knew he wasn’t going to sell the team and wasn’t looking for a way out of town and after 30+ years of growth his investment has paid off. Does he do the same thing with the Indians or the Twins? Who knows, but he certainly was the biggest celebrity owner of this generation other than maybe Jerry Jones
by Rear Admiral on July 14, 2010 at 12:14 am
Samantha, his two suspensions got ample play today. And Winfield was on from 4-5 talking about him and was pretty blunt.
Like Bobby Knight said, the guy was a great American. Can’t argue with that.
by samantha adams on July 14, 2010 at 12:51 am
Yes, they brought up the suspensions but they were always follow up with a “but…blahblahblah you can’t deny the man was a WINNER!” I didn’t catch Winfield on TV today, I hope he was straightforward about how poorly he was treated, but I’m sure even that was masked with some bull about how he understood why he did it because ‘the boss’ was just so darn competitive.
The only thing I can’t argue with and will surely miss is the fact that he’s probably the greatest sports villain of all time in American sports. Not sure if that’s worthy of one being considered a great American, but if anyone were to associate himself with that sorta title and defend, it’d be Bobby Knight.
by mattsh20 on July 14, 2010 at 1:12 am
I wanna hang out with this dude. Mel and Jimmy should have a couple fingers of the glenlivet neat together.

Way off topic but that Dirty Army website is fucking trash. Dave they had you on it recently and they also blast some of the smokes. I cant believe that people actually enjoy that garbage. Look under cities for New England(which is a city apparently) to check it out. From what i read he dated smokeshow Kelly and now he rips her daily. Kid is such a bitch.
by mattsh20 on July 14, 2010 at 2:42 am
Captain homo, fuck you for even reading that rat ass site. Do you have any fucking clue how big of a low life maggot the dude is that runs that swag? Do some research before you tell “Daves” readers to go look at that. 1) cuz you prob promote that site you fag. 2) Cuz its embarrassing how those pieces of shit talk about Boston like its “New England”. 3) They have so much gayness running through their veins that they feel the need to rip on every girl… which theyve never hooked up with. I will fight any dude that works for the “Dirty”. And this time you can tape it live homos!
by DGBruin08 on July 14, 2010 at 4:29 am
Personally, I just love it when anyone puts tWWL, ESPN, to shame on their own airwaves. Being on the West Coast, I get tired of hearing the spin machine, known as ESPN, just try to make crooks, and cheats the likes of Southern Cal, and others, into “great” people, and “great” institutions. I’m with Quann here, old people, and their lack of filters would make this world a better place. At the very least, they would make it a funnier, more interesting place.
by kaisersoze on July 14, 2010 at 4:53 am
Hold it a second: the man was a winner? Really? From 2001 to 2008 he spend 1.5 billion dollars on a team that:
2001: Lost the WS to an expansion team
2002: Lost in the first round
2003: Lost the Ws to an expansion team
2004: I forgot how that went…oh yeah, only team in baseball to cough up a 3-0 lead.
2005: First round tap
2006: First round tap
2007: Third place finish
2008: First round tap
And then from ’81 to ’94, not one playoff appearance.
If you throw $200 million at a team every single year, eventually, you’ll win. Law of big numbers. Get enough all-stars, pay them enough $20 mill per year contracts, eventually you’ll get the right guys.
Randy Johnson, Jaret WRight and Kevin Brown all sucked at well over $120 million? Okay, let’s get: C.C. Sabbathia, Kevin Brown, and a few other Knuckleheads at $300 million.
Sheffield, Giambi, and Masui didn’t work out at over $250 million? Okay, let’s get A-Rod, Granderson, and a few other knuckleheads at $300 million.
That doesn’t make the guy great. It just doesn’t.
And let’s stop making retarded comments like “if the other owners cared about winning and not turning a profit..”
If you think for one second that the Yankees don’t care about turning a profit, you are a fucking idiot. Maybe you should go get one of those $1,000 priced “Legends” seats they sell. It’s cut down from last year’s $2,000 price. You know, because the Yankees don’t care about profiting…..because they didn’t have the YES network or anything so they can sell their own ads, promote their own guys, etc, etc….
Steinbrenner was a good businessman. He was also very flawed. He was suspended twice from baseball, and the second time it was supposed to be a “lifetime ban” in 1990. He was reinstated in ’93. (Cue Pete Rose whining.)
You don’t get suspended for life in baseball because you are a good guy. Let’s cool it with the praise.
He did some good things, he did some bad things, and he made and spent a lot of money.
Rest in peace.
Next.

How much money in payroll did the Red Sox spend from 1918 to 2004 that was apparently all 100% wasted because they never won dick?
by tommyk on July 14, 2010 at 8:46 am
I think Stein was definitely an interesting figure who had has issues. Funny thing, I havent heard much about the ‘real’ Stein, only his positives.
ESPN spins everything to the way they want. They are no different than FoxNews, MSNBC, etc, just that they deal in sports. Most of their netowrk is a bunch of stupid robots with no mind of their own who spew out whatever their producers tell them to in their morning meetings.
by The-Viking on July 14, 2010 at 8:51 am

by Wicked Mr Pickett on July 14, 2010 at 9:11 am
Steinbrenner’s legacy:
- Won in the 70s when free agency was new and only really big stars (like Reggie) could not be afforded by small market teams.
- In the 1980s he was such an idiot and caused such a circus that the Yankees are a joke.
- from 1994 on he lets his GM run the show, as he gets too old to be a full time pain in the ass, and they succeed as he just cuts the checks and gets out of the way.
I don’t really like Kraft but he has a lot more to do with the success of the Patriots than Steinbrenner ever did with the Yankees.
by Hank Scorpio on July 14, 2010 at 9:12 am
Viking, Tommy was fair and balanced, he mentioned the Libtards at MSNBC. What, do you want him to name every media outlet in the world?
by Murray Chadwick on July 14, 2010 at 9:30 am
no one is out for profit more than the Kraft’s. They just know that winning increases profits for them. They’re not stupid.
by tommyk on July 14, 2010 at 9:32 am
Thank you Hank. As we know, every network has their agenda.

Ever owner in sports is there to make a profit, and every owner wants to win (except maybe jacobs). Steinbrenner did care more than the avg owner about winning championships but lets not praise this guy as the best owner ever. He was Al Davis unil 94 when he got back from a lifetime ban that lasted 3 years. he then took a back seat and wrote massive checks to every free agant they needed. Big fucking deal, he could spend more $$$ than half of the MLB teams combined and he is supposed to be praised for that? it did not take any talent to do what he did, just a bottomless wallet. What the fuck do you people want from ESPN. They are a huge network whose whole M.O. is to have as little controversy as possible in order to not turn people off. You want the anchors blasting away their opinions? Their job is to report, not to give commentary. You want commentary go read some blog or writers who offer commentary. But that’s not espn and it never was so let it go already.
