DETROIT –Johnny Damon is staying with the Tigers after all, saying “I love Detroit.” The Red Sox claimed Damon on waivers this week, but he had the right to veto a move to Boston because of a no-trade clause in his contract. “These guys really like me here,” Damon said Tuesday, adding that he spoke to each of his teammates individually to be sure he was wanted in the Tigers’ clubhouse. “This game’s tough enough and when you’re in a position and you’re in a city and you’re in a place where you want to be, a place where you’re happy, there’s no real reason of doing that,” Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon said. “I’ve always admired Johnny since I came here in ’05 and he was one of the players that took me under his wing and showed me the big leagues. I wish him nothing but the best.” “I’m not surprised because he’s in a situation where he’s happy and if he’s happy, why not stay? If he’s not happy, obviously he would have left.”

It was not a ploy to block him from TB. The Rays did not put in a waiver claim for him. The Sox honestly wanted him back. I can’t see why he is still upset at Sox fans. After specifically saying he’d never sign with the Yankees just for more money, he did precisely that. Have fun in Detroit!

Well if those 4 teams were in the playoffs, the Redsox wouldn’t be since only 4 teams make it per league. Also, if the Yanks and Rays were already in, the Sox couldn’t be in since only 2 teams from 1 division can make it. Good stuff though.

Just as an FYI to Martin Blank and Otwisted, Sideburns is right. All the teams choose to select someone on waivers, then it goes to the worst team first. They don’t call every team, from the bottom up, to see if they want to claim someone. It works on a deadline system. Just wanted to clarify.

You are correct about the procedure, but Sideburns is still wrong.
The claims are confidential…. there is no way for any team to know who else made claims. They make the claim so that he can go to no higher seeded team, already knowing Damon would NEVER come back here (no chance for next season here, …but maybe in Detroit)
