Letter To The Editor – Poor Policy in Dalton Little League

Our son, who loves to play sports, has the distinction of being selected as a MAPLE soccer player on a team in Springfield. He is one of two players at the U12 level from Dalton who share this honor. The Dalton/Hinsdale Little League has a rule which benches players who miss a game or practice for another sport.
This past weekend, our son had the distinction of representing Dalton in the State Cup soccer quarterfinals in Lancaster where they won the Division 1 title and now go onto compete with teams from Boston for the coveted Paul Irwin Cup later in June. To do this he needed to miss two Little League games and now the league has chosen to bench the teams starting pitcher for four games (the remainder of the season).
What is the objective of the Dalton Little League? Is it to teach young boys not to work to their potential or to become the best they can be or to be proud of what they represent? Our son has missed every soccer practice which conflicted with a Little League practice or game and never once did his nationally-ranked MAPLE soccer coach punish or bench him. Unfortunately, the other representative from Dalton was forced to quit Little League two weeks ago and now our son will be handing in his uniform as well. He will do so with tears in his eyes for a sport he loves, but if he cannot play what choice does he have?
Shame on these men on the executive board who are re-living their dreams vicariously through our children. Shame on them for stifling what could be an up and coming ball player. The sour taste left in our son’s and our family’s and our community’s mouth will last him a lifetime. The league needs to teach compassion, encouragement and understanding and do away with this embattled competition between baseball and other sports like soccer in the spring. It takes a village to raise our children and the Dalton/ Hinsdale Little League has failed miserably in its role!

The only titles/championships that matter for kids under 12 years old is in Little League. Maybe that’s why your Nationally ranked MAPLE soccer coach didn’t bench your kid for missing practice. Because even he knows soccer is for bitches in this country. And you can cut the shit with this woe is me routine. I hate to break it to you but the world doesn’t revolve around your spoiled brat son’s life. You can’t just skip games without repercussions. Paul Irwin passed a few years ago, its a memorial tournament, and no I don’t play in MAPLE, nor have I ever. So yeah…
It doesnt matter what leagues, the issue is the same for all kids who play two sports, you gotta make sacrifices. End of story.
El Pres… I have to agree with the Mom here. My kids go through the same issues trying to play multiple sports and there is always a conflict. Being that soccer is usually a Fall Sport, Baseball should take precedence, but a Maple playoff game should trump a baseball practice without an issue. What is going to happen it will make the kid choose one sport over another. And if this kid is good enough to play Maple (Mass Premier League) then I am sure he will drop baseball.
I think coaches need to relax some of these rules, as they are driving kids away.
If the soccer teams name is Green Death than maybe you give them a pass.

I played multiple sports as a kid and I had to choose which one I wanted to go to, but it didn’t mean I wasn’t allowed to play in the next game, that’s just BS. Kids play multiple sports, if I missed one sport one week, I alternated and missed the other one the next

I have been part of many sport teams as both a player and a coach, and what pisses me off more than anything is kids that make a commiment to play, and not show up to the games. As a baseball coach, there is nothing worse than having to tell 8 kids that they can’t play today becuase little johnny would rather kick around a soccer ball with a bunch of homo’s than play a real sport like baseball. These parents are all yuppies which is the problem with youth sports today. The solution here is easy, Don’t sign your kid up to play 2 sports at the same time. If your kid sucks, don’t sign him up in the first place.
So nothing about that baseball game last night i heard about, just rings and parent letters…

The mom is just trying to get some stupid ass rule changed which the peons in charge of league are to proud (or stupid) to consider overriding. This kid isn’t getting paid to play little league baseball (or soccer) missing a midweek practice in order to play in an allstar game is a no-brainer and should not be punished by the league. If the individual coach wants to bench the kid it is up to him, but to have a league rule is simply idiotic.

Thanks for the “statistics” gizzlefo. I played both when I was a kid and I never missed a practice or game for baseball. The kid has to decide what he enjoys more. When people air-out their dirty laundry they sound like idiots. Also, this kid is going to get shit on at school for this article. His buddies can read. Damn, kids are so spoiled anymore. Whatever happened to commitment to a team? Play a sport and stick with it. Kids and parents should not think they are good enough to be able to wake up and choose which sport they will play today. What are they teaching the other kids on the team, sorry your not good enough to play two sports so you have to practice and go to every game. Why not let every kid do it and some games they will forfet and some they will have a full team. I would do the same if I was that coach.

ditch the baseball game and play in the MAPLE tournament/ the tournament after the MAPLE one. simple as that. the local little league (similar to HS sports) means absolutely nothing. MAPLE, for those that don’t know, was once/ borderline is the biggest league in the whole state of Massachusetts. only a few select squads/ players actually play a level up from this. football > baseball. your kid will thank you when he’s 25 years old and not a fat fart.. unlike “el presidente”.

You have it all out of perspective. Little League coaches and board members believe that there is no greater honor than to play for them and their league no matter if it’s a weekend game in Bumblefuk or if it’s in the one-in-a-million randomness of the Little League World Series.

You may not think it’s an honor to play little league but it is a committment. Those that don’t honor the committment suck. This two sports a season shit sucks when a player says fuck you to one of the teams.
