DM - Sylvia Kystel, star of the 1970s soft porn Emmanuelle movies, has died of cancer at the age of 60. Kristel starred in five Emmanuelle films between 1974 and 1993 and another six TV spin-offs. The series of French-made erotic movies are famed for bringing soft-core pornography to mainstream cinema. Kristel also became famous for her steamy nude scenes in another 40 films, including lead roles in X-rated versions of Lady Chatterley’s Lover and World War One spy drama Mata Hari. She accidentally went for an audition for Emmanuelle, having intended to try out for a television commercial next door. She was asked to remove her dress and, after slipping it off and letting it fall to the floor, was told she had the part. The movie told the story of a bored housewife living with a diplomat in Asia who fills her time having sex with various people.

We lost a great one today boys. Emmanuelle has gone to that great soft core porn heaven in the sky. Just redefined the game. Without Emmanuelle there is no Red Shoe Diaries. There is no Shannon Tweed. There may not even be Showtime or Cinemax. Just a trailblazer in every sense of the word. Tonight I tip a 40 to the passing of one of the most important actresses who has ever lived. A young girl’s strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk indeed…

PS – I love the story of how she got her first job.   She meant to audition for a tv commercial and ended up on the casting couch instead.   A professional from the word go.
