Virginia - Dean Kovanes is the owner of the Arby’s franchise at 2309 W. Broad Street in Richmond, Va., which sits only steps away from the Washington NFL team’s training facility… With the Patriots visiting Richmond for joint practices with the Washington team this week, Kovanes is [taking] a jab at New England coach Bill Belichick, who famously quit his one-day job as head coach of the Jets by writing “I resign as HC of the NYJ” on a napkin… But the Cleveland native insists it’s all in fun and made sure to make it clear that he’d welcome Belichick in his establishment. “We’re right across the street from the facility,” he said. “He can come in, have our meatcrafters build him a great sandwich. He can sit in the lobby, out of the heat and humidity of Richmond, and watch practice through the binoculars if he chooses to. And when he leaves we’ll even tuck a few sandwiches into his hoodie.”
I have to confess, I don’t know how to take this. I get Dean Kovanes is trolling here, but is it the fun kind of trolling or not? Are his shenanigans cheeky and fun or are they cruel and tragic, which makes them not really shenanigans at all? I mean, on the one hand the ‘hc of the nyjs” is one of the great moments in the history of coaching. It was a brilliant, prescient move on The Hooded One’s part. The great, cosmic Big Bang that did nothing less than give birth to the whole Patriots dynasty. On the other hand, what’s with the binoculars? Are they to say he can watch the practices from his car? Or is that some kind of a Spygate dig? I kind of feel like Frankie Five Angels when the Rosato brothers gave him a $100 bill saying it was a goodwill gesture but he took it as an insult. I suppose the thing to do is just feel good about the fact that everyone in the world from the Redskins t0o Asia to South America to meatcrafter franchisees in Richmond, VA are obsessed with the Patriots and their coach. And we barely even know they exist. They want us to eat their roast beef because they want to be us.
