So if you worked for ESPN and they told you what you could and couldn’t write about…..you wouldn’t do it?

I agree with you, and it is unfortunate that Simmons was, for a lack of better words, put on a leash at ESPN. He is a gifted writer and, I think, very funny while providing objective, and satriical commentary relative to sports and pop-culture. With that being said, I hope that he leaves ESPN and starts his own website otherwise the metaphorical “leash” is only going to get shorter.

I’m not going to compare him to Dave and Barstool because Dave is a blogger with a different style/technique, and he too has cornered his market very well.

First, let me apologize for misinterpreting your statement. I thought you were blasting Dave for moving up like Bill did. Now on to Simmons…back when he was just The Sports Guy, he would write about anything he wanted; anything that the average joe would want to read about. Since being at ESPN, he has completely changed his writing to cater to whatever the company deems appropriate at the time. He likes to tell himself that he still writes for the average person, when in reality, he seems more out of touch than ever. I understand that working for a company like ESPN is a major change from a freestyle blogger, but the fact is he has changed from what he was in the beginning, which is what gave him all this success in the first place.

You misinterpreted what I wrote. I told Dave that he is moving up, that is a compliment, not an insult. How you read into and form your opinion is on you. Furthermore, I am interested to see what kind of proof you have to show how Simmons’ writing changed and how he lacks “integrity and personal dignity (as opposed to impersonal dignity??). I am not disagreeing or agreeing with you, I am simply intrigued.

So your point here is that Dave shouldn’t be out trying to make a better living for himself? This is hardly doing what Simmons did. El Pres is expanding to get more exposure and make more money. That is what anyone would do in his situation. What Simmons did, however, was change the way he writes and what he writes about. El Pres has not changed his style or material at all. That is the biggest difference between them. Simmons lacks integrity and any sense of personal dignity to back up what he writes about.
