“Hey Tomas.Er.Um…hey, how’s Montreal?”

Tim Thomas decided to play a little GOP hooky and interject politics into an apolitical event when he refused to join his fellow Stanley Cup-winning teammates at the White House for the traditional, post-title meeting with the leader of the free world.

Per Puck Daddy, the Bruins will “address” the issue with the right-leaning goalie who has frequently expressed his fondness for the odious Glenn Beck, thereby proving in fact he is not perfect. But Chiarelli said that Thomas opted to not attend and will explain why later on his Facebook page (gee, I wonder what it might be…).

Thomas isn’t the first athlete to eschew meeting the POTUS because of political differences and surely won’t be the last. Yeah sure, it’s his right and blah, blah, blah. But c’mon man, will it really fucking kill you to listen to Obama pretend he knows about hockey for 10 minutes while presenting him with a jersey? Opting out isn’t going turn around the economy or lower your taxes—it just makes you look like a sore sport.

Regardless of one’s politics, it’s still an honor to be invited to the White House for an event, especially when you are one of the people that is going to be recognized by the President (for the record, I’m an I and didn’t vote for Barry). But Thomas, who may be the yin to Michael Moore’s yang, decided he was all set. Too bad. Because it reeks of pettiness and casts a minor but dopey shadow on what should otherwise be a blemish-free day.
