I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say today is one of the most disappointing days in American history. First we had God refusing to say “But WAIT! There’s more!” to the legendary Billy Mays. And now the US drops a heartbreaking loss in the Something Other Cup to Brazil. Who cares if soccer is only relevant in countries where they eat dogs. This would’ve been a proud moment if they’d could have hung onto a 2-0 lead. It would’ve been bigger than the Miracle on Ice and V-J Day and the moon landing all rolled into one. Now we won’t get the chance to hear “This will be the thing that’s finally going to put soccer on the map in the US” from the people who’ve been predicting it for 40 years. But it wasn’t meant to be because all of America’s real athletes were once again busy doing other things. So I guess Evan Lysacek’s victory in the World Figure Skating Championships remains the best moment in American sports in 2009.
