How do you know there’s gonna be a smear campaign? He was treated pretty well on his way out. It was clear that the trade went down before the game, and he was given one last hurrah at Fenway Park. 3 days ago he’s told that he’s being benched for Middlebrooks, and all of a sudden he’s playing again (in the field, no less), Middlebrooks is DH, and David freaking Ortiz is benched?
That could be coincidence, but this isn’t: I was at the game, and they had a Kevin Youkilis highlight video on the jumbotron at the end of the 8th inning. They knew he was gone, and the entire organization set up an unofficial “Kevin Youkilis Day.” I’m sure someone somewhere will have something negative to say, but the club as a whole bent over backwards to give him a good farewell.
