Now that the story of the Red Sox place coup attempt has been out for 24 hours, we’re finally getting to hear everyone’s spin on it.  Straining the bullshit of the major players through filter of the Believability Index:

Adrian Gonzalez: “They had a meeting with the players, they had a meeting with the coaches and they had a meeting with Bobby and it was to assess where we were as a team and as an organization and why we were where we were, and what our thoughts were, basically.”

And: “I don’t know what you’re talking about … I’ve never seen that guy in our clubhouse before. He doesn’t know what’s going on with us.”

Believability Index Rating: Gonzalez makes it sound like these meeting were an insurance seminar.  “So Adrian, I’d like to get your thoughts about Bobby being such an asshole…” And conveniently leaves out the fact that it was his whiny text to John Henry…“omg we H8 Bobbyv so much! he SUXXX!!! smh :(…that made the meetings necessary in the first place.  And while I’m always a fan of blaming the media, saying you’ve never seen the reporter around is a non-denial denial.  BIR: 1 out of 10

Jeff Passan of Yahoo!: “There were more than a dozen people in that meeting. I don’t think that any of the people in there would have minded if Bobby Valentine would have gotten fired. The impression I got is that John Henry and Larry Lucchino were stunned by what they were being told.”

Believability Index Rating: He claims to have talked to several people who were there and checked his sources.  And besides, do you have any problem believing the story?  BIR: 9 out of 10

Dustin Pedroia: “I’ll be honest with everybody. We had a meeting in New York. Coaches had a meeting, Bobby had a meeting, we all had a meeting. Basically, when I spoke, I said we all need to be better. That includes owners, Bobby, coaches, and especially the players. I’ve had one problem with Bobby earlier in the year and I went into his office and I talked to him like a man, and he talked to me like a man. And we’ve been great. We’ve had a great relationship. That’s all I can really say about it. I’ll go out and play for him any day of the week… I don’t think Bobby should be fired…It’s on the players.”

Believability Index Rating: I’m struggling a little with the idea that Pedroia started out hating his manager but learned to love and respect him in the course of a tumultuous .500 season.  But he’s still got a positive balance in his Goodwill Account he can draw on.  I’ll believe him because I want to believe him.  BIR: 8 out of 10

Bobby Valentine: “Wow. Is that what was said, really? That’s what Dustin and Adrian said? It did say that? I didn’t hear that. I’m glad that July is over, because they’re still playing for me. I’m not going to comment on any stories because I don’t know what issues you might be referring to. Adrian’s issues? Dustin and I had a talk about a meeting I had. I don’t know if that was July.”

Believability Index Rating: No way he’s just hearing about this for the first time.  Half your team doesn’t meet with the owner trying to commit managercide without word getting back to you.  Throwing around this “July?  I don’t know about July.  Was it July?” nonsense sounds like my kid trying to change the subject  about what time I told him to do some work around the house.  BIR: 2 out of 10

John Henry:What Tom [Werner], Larry [Lucchino] and I heard in the player meeting was one overriding sentiment. Players felt responsible for the record. They weren’t blaming injuries or anyone but themselves. At the same time they openly spoke about what could improve in addition to their play. They made substantive points. We addressed those points. No one in that meeting at any time took the position that Bobby should be or needed to be replaced.”

Believability Index Rating: You know how we know he’s lying? Because if the players demanded anything other than Lucchino’s puppet get fired, he would’ve taken them on a boatride or given them headphones.   BIR: 2 out of 10

Boston Media - These meetings took place 3 weeks ago but it took a national writer to break the story.  So much for all this talk about how tough the press is in this town and all the scrutiny the players face around here.

Believability Index Rating: Maybe if everyone in the media horde covering this team weren’t so busy writing books with the players, making excuses and carrying water for owners they would’ve let us know there was a full scale mutiny going on instead of us having to hear it from Yahoo!
