Why Did Danny Ainge Bash Rajon Rondo Publicly?
Am I the only one that thinks this Rajon Rondo thing is flat out weird. I mean can anybody come up with one good reason why Danny Ainge went on WEEI and bashed Rajon Rondo yesterday? I don’t care if everything he said was true. I don’t care whether it turns out Rajon is a cancer to this team and needs to go. I still don’t understand what the benefit of airing your dirty laundry publicly like this is? I mean if your trying to trade the guy, which it appears they are, wouldn’t you want other teams thinking he is Mother Teresa. Why would you want to make it seem like he’s a malcontent when you’re trying to unload him? And if you’re going to keep him why do you want to piss him off like this? If you really had a problem couldn’t you just talk to him in private? And let’s just for the sake of argument say Ainge thinks that publicly belittling Rondo will motivate him. Well that’s great but he’s a free agent next year and if he goes out and has a great season why would he want to resign here after this? This shit can only come back to bite us in the ass when it comes time to negotiate or trade him. So I just don’t see how anything positive can come out of this from the Celtics point of view. Is there anybody out there who can tell me what I’m missing or is Danny Ainge just an idiot?
Bob Ryan wrote a good article about this. I’ve never seen a player coming off about a triple double in the playoffs get shopped like this. I agree it’s going to bite us in the ass.

He’s setting the stage in case he does actually trade him. Throw out a couple ‘he needs to grow up,’ ‘he’s not a max contract player,’ etc etc… then when they send him packing for a more traditional PG, it seems justified.
You can hear it now: ‘well, this was a really tough decision for us, because we really liked Rajon, but he just needed to grow up a little… and we weren’t confident we could sign him to a long term contract, given his expectations…’
blah blah blah, it’s all PR bullshit.
They are not going to trade Rondo… He is beating him up publicly and making trade rumors public so that Rondo understands he is not a max salary player.

Rondo is a huge pain in the ass for Rivers…much bigger than we’re hearing about. So they’re trying to trade him because they have no intention whatsoever to give Rondo max money. Unable to trade him for equal value, they’re covering their asses publicly for when he walks for nothing
That doesn’t mean I agree with them, but I think that’s why this is happening

danny ainge is an idiot. rondo has been amazing and he’s my favorite celtic. doc rivers said multiple times that rondo is one part of that team that can not be replaced and that they cannot win without him. he brings a whole new element to the celtics and without him they are too slow and old to win a championship over the likes of LA and Cleveland (even though Cleveland just made a horrible move picking up shaq like that). Everything about this Danny Ainge thing was stupid and bizarre. He’s almost as retarded as perez
Huge mistake on Ainge’s part. In two years or so when KG and Pierce are on the decline, it’ll be Rondo left to build around. Rumor was that the Celts were proposing a trade to move up in the draft for Rubio, but without McHale on the other end helping out a friend it’s not happening.

he is downplaying rondo so other teams don’t drive the price of Rondo through the roof for the celts, either now or next year. Just like when buying a house you don’t sing to the realtor how much you want it.
What am I missing here? Rondo comes to compete every night, is tough as nails and is the best passer is the game. Not to mention he is by far the only reason we made it past the bulls.
Ainge is not Theo…the Allen trade brought us a veteran and gave the “Sonics” youth so it worked out for both sides…the KG deal was a friggen gift from a friend…now if something is not broken, don’t fix it…why shop Rondo? many stars are hard to deal with and that’s the challenges the coaches need to face…absolute horrible move trying to trade him right now, makes no sense…and Ainge is pissing me trying to play around with a team that is just fine right now….

Why does everyone continue to act like KG just woke up one day and was a Celtic? They gave up a shitload and I dare somebody to find a trade where more bodies and picks were moved for one player.
Al Jefferson, All-Star averaging 23 and 13 before he got hurt, Gomes an NBA starter, Gerald Green was penciled in as a Tracy McGrady waiting to happend, Telfair a backup PG, an expiring contract in Theo Ratliffe and 1st rd picks to boot.
At the time, I thought we gave up too much for KG. Obviously it worked out fantastic but this was no gift from McHale. What Jerry West gave the Lakers was a fucking gift.

And Rondo ain’t going no where. You play this year out with the Championship starting 5. Ray’s contract is off the books next year and now you have money to sign Rondo long term.

Rondo has obviously shown disinterest in signing with the C’s after this season. That’s why Ainge was shopping him – they need to get something for him before he walks away for free after next season.
So Ainge shits on him publicly making it seem like the only reason Rondo isn’t a top player is his attitude that another team could fix in an effort to get a team to bite on him.
And, he’s in a contract year so no matter how pissed off at the Celtics he is, he’ll have to play 100%.
Did anyone hear the interview? I didn’t but a friend told me it was nothing like it came out in print. Said Ainge was very complimentary to Rondo 99% of the time.
Sort of like if I say Prez is a ball slapping, Idol obsessed half a sissy who sucks the funny out of every room he’s in, but his blog is ok. The quote in the paper could be “Beefdrape says Prez writes good blog” and they would have missed my point.

He’s showing now interest because Ainge has refused to show interest in negotiating an extension for the next couple of years. Ainge is too focused on “now” with all these older players…ya it worked for a year but they can’t be wasting top dollars on Ray Allen who’s going to be hurt half the season and then blow ass in the playoffs when you can be signing one of their best young players on the team. ainge is not Theo? when was the last time Theo even made a good deal. the answer to your question El, is that ainge is not a good GM. he made two good moves in his entire career with the C’s, getting Ray and KG. compare this to all the bad moves he made, losing a chance at brandon roy so we could get sebsastian telfair, losing a chance to make a trade to get chris paul, and the fact that he overvalues players more then anyone in the league, that (gerald green, tony allen, bill walker, gabe pruitt). the fact is he is not a good judge of talent

It’s like everyone forgot that before McHale handed Ainge KG and the championship that Ainge was an awful, terrible, idiotic GM. Why would he be any different now?
Jacoby, you’re a donk. He didn’t just choose Telfair over Roy. He had to dump Raef LaFrentz fucking salary which he inherited and the only way to do that was to handcuff him with that pick which turned into Roy. He took a flyer on Telfair, a top 10 pick in return.
And regarding his evaluation of talent, way to leave out Al Jefferson and Perkins who were 18 yr olds that he scouted and drafted. Way to note that he has turned 3 2nd rd picks into NBA starters in Gomes, Powe and Big Baby. STARTERS. You’ll have a tough time finding 3 2nd rd picks still in the NBA from the last 4 yrs.
And Green was a projected top 7 pick that fell to them at 17 and was widely regarded as the steal of the draft at the time.

Celts are far from the favorites. The Lakers, Cavs, and Magic (now with Vince Carter) all have somethin to say about it. Everyone is improving around the Celts and if they don’t help their bench they won’t win it. I agree that starting 5 is the best tho.

if rondo developed a midrange jump shot and at least the ability to hit the occasional 3, Rondo would be unstoppable and the Celtics would have no choice but to keep him….
the bottom line is that he cant shoot, but if he could shoot, he would be one of the top 5 pointguards in the game as opposed to top 10 or top 15

Am I the only one who has noticed over the years that Rondo has no outside shot? The sport’s basketball, and the only way he’s getting points is by driving. That’s a one-dimensional player, great in his current role but there’s no way he’s carrying a team. Not a max-contract player by any means, Ainge is right.
